Artist Statement
The road traveled is as important as the destination. The painting process allows me to experience the satisfaction of process conception and process final completion. As progressive avant-garde artists, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko made painting accessible to me. More recently my inspiration comes from painters Pierre Soulage, Nicholas de Stael and Robert Ryman. Their use of the horizontal plane is very evident in my own work. Texture is also a major component of my paintings. I want my paintings to instill a calmness to the viewer, a celebration of the moment, a celebration of life. My hope is to create a piece that causes you to pause, one that leaves you wanting to know more, and to ask questions.
My art is mindful self-expression using the abstract and at times a touch of form. Primarily abstract landscapes, sometimes monochrome, other times full of color. The highly textured surface adds to painting. Some have described my work as sculptures hanging on the wall.
Artistic Process
I custom make my own canvas, using hardboard (Masonite) and select pine boards. My paintings are highly textured, using mediums and thick acrylic and oil paints. Typically the finished work is protected with an oil based polyethylene. All of my artwork comes ready to hang.
Stub Estey brings to life the historic story of a Man and his family who travel west in pursuit of the 1849 gold rush! Based on a diary discovered in the dusty attic of Mr. Estey’s childhood home in Pompey, New York, the story chronicles the travels of Daniel W. Holdbrook and places it in context of a growing nation. It is America’s story and reflects the events happening in America and the world in the mid-19th century. Mr. Estey will read excerpts of his book and sign copies.
