The “Open Afternoon Book Club” meets in the Story Garden every third Wednesday at 1:00 pm. For November, this group has selected Candace Millard’s Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President.
Also a New York Times bestseller, Destiny of the Republic brings alive a forgotten chapter of U.S. history by giving an account of James Abram Garfield’s rise from poverty to become one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president.
A reluctant presidential candidate, who took on the nation’s corrupt political establishment, Garfield was shot in the back four months after his inauguration in 1881. He survived the attack but became the object of bitter, behind-the-scenes struggles for power—over his administration, over the nation’s future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care.(Amazon.com)
